Clarkdale AZ Home & Building Tour
Clarkdale Home & Building Tour

Shortly before 11 am on June 21, 1928, two armed men - Willard Forrester and Earl Nelson - entered the Bank of Arizona in downtown and robbed $50,000. Willard Forrester was shot and killed.

Clarkdale surving bank robber Earl Nelson... had several alias's. He went by the name Paul Hoffman (when he was in the Matt Kimes gang, sometime involved with the Ma Barker boys), He used the name Claude Shriver (when he stayed in Cottonwood, AZ at the Cottonwood Hotel and bought a car. The real Claude Shriver might have been a relative (I found one from the same parts of OK)... Other alias: Joe Stanley, Horace Lee, and the later Earl Nelson... Real name: Lee Forrester... yes, he was the brother to Willard Forrester who was shot and killed in Clarkdale. Lee (Earl Nelson) busted out of prison several times. Years later he talked the prison guard into releasing him on a good behaviour leave, I think he robbed another bank, anyways he ran out in front of a milk truck, was hit and run over, later died in the hospital. Someone needs to write a book on this guy!
