Cottonwood Hotel Tripadvisor review October 1, 2012
Excellent romantic getaway
Thank you Karen for your hospitality. The Mae West suite was exactly perfect for Ms. Brannigan and I. Exceptionally romantic and very well kept and equipped, From the original wood floors to the claw foot tub, even the decor. If you are staying anywhere in the Verde Valley area on a romantic getaway and don't stay here, you missed the mark. Ms. Brannigan and I plan to return as often as possible. Thanks, Marshall

10/02/12... Ron T. Thousand Oaks, CA
My wife and I came here for an extra-long weekend (4 nights) and liked it a lot. We were in the John Wayne Suite, full kitchen, separate bedroom, living room. Small but serviceable bathroom, fine because leaves more room for the suite. Absolutely love the shared balcony across the front of the second floor, looking out over the street. Had coffee there in the mornings and often happy hour, sometimes even dinner in the evenings. Nice place to meet and socialize with the other guests. Real nice restaurants steps away, trailhead for the "Jail Trail" two blocks away. Host/owner Karen is terrific, we really felt at home, and she has great suggestions on local touring and dining.
Comment from Karen L. of Cottonwood Hotel 10/5/2012 Thanks Ron for taking the time to write us a nice review and again for choosing the historic Cottonwood Hotel for your stay. We look forward to your next visit. :)

After spending the day in Sedona last weekend, I decided to get a room instead of driving back to Phoenix. All the inexpensive rooms were taken though, so I headed off towards Jerome to see some friends.
I randomly chose Cottonwood Hotel after doing a search for the area. I called and talked to Karen, who described two rooms I could choose between, and then she held the Wine Room for me.
This was a great experience from start to finish. Karen is super personable and obviously loves the area. She gave me a tour of the room and its amenities, which was huge, more like an apartment, and spotless. The bed was amazing, and even though it's a small hotel, she had all the little details, like a hair dryer, and all organic soaps and shampoo. The room had a kitchenette, with good coffee and a variety of good teas too. It was all completely unexpected.
There's a fabulous balcony on the second floor where you can see all of downtown Old Town, and the distant mountains. If you haven't been there lately, Old Town now has really good restaurants, including the Vineyard and Thai Palace, and the Red Rooster for breakfast.
So a random choice proved an excellent bet, and I'll go back there for sure and bring other people next time.

9/24/2012... Laurandz, Phoenix, AZ "Wine Tasting In Cottonwood, AZ"
Cottonwood Hotel Review: A stay over is a necessity when wine tasting up north and after enjoying tastings at a couple of winiries and then some of the tasting rooms along Main St. In old town Downtown Cottonwood retiring to the Cottonwood Hotel was the perfect answer. Karen the owner is everything. She answers the phone, prepares the room, greets you and is a historian on top of it all. She's wonderful and what makes your stay at the hotel a success. The hotel is a historic building and is being restored by the owner. John Wayne, Mae West and other celebrities of days gone by have stayed with pictures and their stories filling the lobby. We had the Mae West suite. The suite was clean and appointed well, the living room/ kitchenette area included a fridge, microwave and small sink/kitchen area separate to the bedroom. A newer platform bed with a foam mattress was quite comfortable. The bathroom, though very tiny accommodated us just fine. For an evening or even a weekend the suite would be a good respite. It's situated perfectly downtown and allows for easy roaming among all the shops, restaurants and tasting rooms that old town has to offer. If there's a negative it's the music across the street that plays well into the night at the bar. Bottom line, yes we'd stay here again.

My partner and I decided to take a trip to Cottonwood for the labor day weekend. After an extensive amount of time spent looking online at accommodations in the area, we finally settled on Cottonwood Hotel. Not too many months prior, we had stayed at Hotel Connor in Jerome and we enjoyed our stay in that Boutique Hotel so much that we decided to try another one. The great thing about staying at an independent hotel is that the lodging can be just as much fun as the rest of the trip is. Fortunately, the Cottonwood Hotel did not in any way disappoint.
From the moment that we arrived on Friday to the minute that we left on Sunday, we enjoyed every moment that we spent at the hotel. In fact, from the minute that we arrived, the hotel owner was equally gracious as she was hospitable. After we were taken to our room and had a moment to put our stuff down, she took us on a tour of the property explaining small details and local lore as we went. The best part, hands down, was the second-story balcony that looks down on Main Street.
The room itself was very nice and cozy. The pictures on the website don't really do the room justice. Before we arrived I was concerned, based on having looked at the pictures, that the room might be tight and cramped and the bed a tad on the short side. This was not the case at all. There was plenty of space in the room itself and the bed was wonderfully soft and comfortable. I also loved the small touches like the wine glasses and bottle opener. I mean it would seem obvious that a room called "The Wine Room" would have these things, but chain hotels tend to overlook the small details.
Of course, my favorite part was that the hotel itself is within walking distance of everything that we wanted to do while in Cottonwood. There are a ton of wineries in the area and many of them have tasting rooms in historic downtown Cottonwood. To be honest, we spent most of our time here. Our favorite was Burning Tree Cellars which has a wonderful and knowledgeable staff, and, of course, great wine! But we also thoroughly enjoyed our chocolate and wine pairing at Pillsbury.
All in all, it was a great weekend. We will definitely be back!
Comment from Karen L. at Cottonwood Hotel. Thank you, Whitney for choosing the Cottonwood Hotel for your recent stay in Cottonwood. I was delighted to hear you had an enjoyable time at our hotel, after reading your review. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest. August 25, 2012...Ingrid_85737 One Night Stay in Wine Suite
We stayed one night in the Wine Suite. The suite is well appointed, with a kitchenette, small refrigerator, queen-size bed, and very small bathroom with a shower. It is on the second floor in about the middle of the hotel, so it is a very quiet room. Karen checked us in, showed us the room, and spend some time suggesting nearby restaurants. Cottonwood Hotel is in the center of a business district that includes several restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and antique shops. It is about 3 miles from the Verde Canyon Railway, which is why we were in the area.
August 27, 2012... Karen Leff, Owner at Cottonwood Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to post your positive thoughts about our smallest suite, our "Wine Room" and choosing the historic Cottonwood Hotel for your stay. We greatly appreciate your supporting our small business and historic hotel preservation project.
My wife and I were originally intending to stay up in Sedona, but after looking at the limited selection of available rooms, we decided to find a place in Cottonwood, since our friends were getting married in Cottonwood anyways.
We came across the Cottonwood Hotel and after reading up on it, my wife fell in love with the original clawfoot tub in the suite and I was ectstatic abou John Wayne and Mae West staying in the hotel. We ended up booking the Mae West suite for two nights.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by Karen, the innkeeper, and she welcomed us like we were family. After showing us the suite, she walked us out to the balcony and told us all about the wine-tasting locations, restaurants and the antique stores up and down main street. Being adventurists, my wife and I were excited by the local information. I won't go into details, but we tried as many of the places we could in 2.5 days that Karen recommended to us.
We ran into Karen later that night at the Vineyard Bistro (which was amazing by the way) and struck up another conversation with her about Cottonwood. After 1.5 hours of sitting with her, there is no question that she has a passion for the Cottonwood Hotel and the city of Cottonwood. If you stay here, you'll have to take the time to sit with her; believe me, you won't regret it.
The suite itself was quaint, and just what I would hope for a historic hotel; I could picture John Wayne and Mae West walking up the same stairs and retiring to the same suite. I loved the clawfoot tub, the hardwood floors, and the overall vibe of the place.
I would highly recommend the Cottonwood Hotel to anybody. The value of learning about the hotel and the city are well worth the price of the room. Karen is working hard toward remodeling the hotel, and I wish I won the lottery, because I would donate money to help her out. If you're a nostalgic person like me, this hotel is truly a gem!

Summer 2012... Robert Bockelken comments: Just got back from a stay at this quaint hotel. Can't wait to return. We stayed in the Wine Room, next time it's the John Wayne room. It is the first time that my wife and I didn't feel the need to look for any little critters, this was the cleanest room I have ever stayed in. Karen was an amazing host with so much valuable information of the area, that she should write a guide book. It is not a brand new luxury hotel, it is a turn of the century renovated hotel, rich in history and decorated to make you feel like you have taken a small step back in time. But Karen takes care of the place better then any maid at a five star hotel, for sure !! The beds are fantastic and the linens and towels are as good as any you will find in those fore-mentioned hotels. Can't say enough about the place and I guess I better stop before you think I'm being paid to write this.
Summer 2012... Amazing location! We decided to stay at the Cottonwood Hotel because it's right in the middle of historical main street in down town Cottonwood. We were able to walk to all the local wine tasting rooms on Main street, not only that but the great restaurants and shops are also all with in walking distance. The owner Karen was great and took the time to show us the hotel and give us some of the history, she also provided us with discount coupons for the local shops in the area and made our stay very enjoyable. If you are looking to explore Cottonwood this is the place to stay. - Jon G

- Great place: CLEAN, COZY, ROMANTIC and real hit with my wife. Highly recommended. Location is great - center of old town and walking distance to Dead Horse state park on the Verde River. There are only a few rooms - maybe 6 or so?? We stayed in the Wine Room. There is a nice balcony at the end of the hall overlooking downtown, and great food just across the street. The hotel owner personally cleans and cares for all the rooms. Good free parking too.

Great historic place to stay in the heart of old town Cottonwood. Karen is a great host and will fill you with stories of the town and of the Hotel itself. Our favorite is the Hotel balcony overlooking Main St. Sit here with a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery. And speaking of wine, you can start your wine tasting travels right from the Hotel without having to drive anywhere. Can't wait till we return again!

Perfect stay! My mom and I stayed here while doing a wine tour and we couldn't have picked a better spot. The hotel itself is adorable and in a prime location to be walking around downtown. The owner was so nice and gave us a lot of great information on the area. I will definatley be back!
This is a really neat little hotel. Lots of history and beautifully restored. Lots to do in the area. Close to Jerome, Sedona, the Cottonwood train, Out of Africa, and Historic Fort Verde. The balcony over looking the street was my favorite part of this hotel. You get to watch the comings and goings of the town while meeting and talking with other guests. Solve the worlds problems or which wine tasting room on the street below had the best wine, or both! We definitely will be back when we get a chance. - Jerry Rose
Hubby and I stayed in the John Wayne suite and LOVED it! Karen is very helpful with coupons and info. If you make your reservations through any other source be sure and contact Karen directly for any special requests, otherwise she won't get them. We will be back.

"We will definitely be back"- The owner, Karen, was very friendly, gave us a tour of the hotel, and gave us recommendations for fun things to do in Cottonwood. The rooms at the hotel were adorable and clean. The beds were super comfortable, in fact I asked Karen to forward me the information on where she purchases the bedding so I can get the same for my own bed! My husband and I slept for 10 hours that night, which is more sleep than we've gotten in a long time! The hotel is located in the heart of historic Cottonwood with lots of restaurant options and hiking trails within walking distance. Our only regret is that we didn't stay for more than one night. We will definitely be back. Cottonwood is a charming town with lots of places to explore! And Cottonwood hotel is very charming and the only place I would stay!

"Great Place in the Heart of Old Town" I have stayed at the Cottonwood Hotel several times - the innkeeper now knows me by name. I have stayed in three different rooms there and each was perfect for my needs. This is a historic hotel and each room is unique. Several times I've stayed here while traveling solo, and once with a friend. Each time I had a great stay. The innkeeper provides environmentally-friendly products in the showers & sinks, the beds are very comfortable, and the small kitchen was great to have. This is located right in the heart of Old Town, on Main Street, so there are lots of great shops and restaurants within walking distance, including two wine-tasting rooms. I stayed here before and loved it. Our hostess (owner Karen Leff) showed us to our suite and explained where everything was and how it worked including the things particular to an older building. Karen also told us about the TV/VCR which I wasn't interested in until she recommended watching some AZ made movies and gave us a short history lesson. She was also helpful in recommending places to eat and drink and activities to check out. The beds are incredibly comfortable. • Stayed April 2011, traveled as a couple
"Wanna Time Travel? 1920's Ambience with 21st Century to Details!" Reviewed May 1, 2011 by Margahrita, Wylie, TX
I selected the Cottonwood Hotel for it's 1920s ambience, but was delightfully surprised by how comfortable the extra little details made it and the fun history of the place. The room, with it's beautiful, original hardwood floors transported me back in time but was very clean and well stocked and even had wonderful bath salts and oils for the original claw foot bathtub as well as free, reliable high-speed internet and WiFi. Best night's sleep I've had in a very long time, despite being right on Main street in Old Town. Ultra comfy and cozy bed made me want to curl up all day and watch the many free in-room Mae West moves provided in my suite. The owner was delightful and worked hard to ensure I had everything I needed. Exterior hotel entrance is always locked so safety was never a concern, especially when traveling alone. Can't beat the location - in the heart of Cottonwood and less than half an hour from Red Rock views in Sedona. View from hotel balcony of sun rising was beautiful. Pricing was extremely reasonable. Note: This is a very small, historic hotel and feels more like you are staying in someone's home or in truly a traveler's hotel "back in the day". Perfect for a weekend getaway or for a writer's escape to start/finish a book. Would gladly stay here again and recommend to others.

It's nice to check out places like this, it has a history to it, and that cozy feeling. It's also not a brand new sterilized facility or dumpy old hotel. It's located right next to some great little restaurants and wine bars, and the owner was great and helpful of new places to check out while downtown. Totally worth it when staying in the area.

"Undiscovered Gem" Reviewed April 18, 2011 by Zoniediver, Phoenix, AZ
I spent the evening of Saturday, April 16th in Cottonwood, Arizona. I wanted to visit "Old Town" Cottonwood without driving far. I found the Cottonwood Hotel online and it looked good, so I made a reservation. I chose the smallest room, since I'd only be there one night and would be busy most of the day - just sleeping in the room.
I checked in at 5:30 p.m. and was met by the innkeeper/owner Karen. She was efficient and friendly. She showed me my room and made sure everything was working. She also gave me a very nice tour of the other rooms. All seemed to be very nice.
My room had a microwave and refrigerator - along with other standard amenities. The decor was very nice, seemingly new. The room was spotless - and I am very picky. There was a clawfoot tub in the bathroom, with a handheld shower. The bath products were "green" and Karen said that she used green cleaning materials, too.
I spent part of the evening drinking wine from one of the local tasting rooms on the balcony in the front of the hotel, watching evening descent on Old Town. It was very enjoyable. Karen is the "unofficial" historian of Old Town, and was a fountain of information about places to eat. She steered me to "Nic's" and said I should check out the "Bartender's Special" - which I did, and ordered, and found to be great - and a nice bargain. Thanks, Karen!
I highly recommend this establishment, and will be back again. I only scratched the surface of tasting rooms, wine bars, and restaurants in Old Town. Not having to drive to do so is a great advantage.
Room Tip: Check the website, it is very accurate!

My sister and I had been going to Cottonwood to visit our father years. After staying at the usual chain motels located in Cottonwood, we decided to try something different. After a search on Google, I came across the Cottonwood Hotel located in Old Town Cottonwood. What a find! Karen, the owner, has done an incredible job restoring this hotel that has such history. You can tell she has put her entire heart and soul into it. The rooms vary in size but our favorite is the John Wayne suite. Since we were there for an extended stay, this room had a kitchen which was a wonderful amenity. This hotel may be historical but Karen has furnished it with modern conveniences, high-count linens and yes, you might even find a flat screen TV. There is also a patio overlooking downtown where you can sip your wine and watch the beautiful desert sky changing colors. You couldn't ask for a better location. - For such an old hotel, this place is super clean. You can tell the innkeeper is meticulous! I LOVED all the "extras"!The organic bath products were amazing and the bath pillow is obviously yours to keep. These little extras made the soak in the claw-foot tub extra special. They even go the extra mile with the linens...bed & bath...ahhh, luxurious. I'll definitely be back so that I can watch more of those FREE Mae West movies. I had no idea she had such a great sense of humor. What a fun weekend we had - can't wait to come back!

A Delightfully Unexpected Surprise! by Dancing Cactus June 18, 2010 (traveling with spouse/partner for leisure)
My Husband and I stayed in the Mae West suite of the historic Cottonwood Hotel. The room was very clean and nicely appointed. We were not expecting anything so lovely and charming. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of wine tasting and trips to both Jerome and Sedona. The bathtub (clawfoot soaker) was great and I think the one Mae West used to use (I NEVER take baths at hotels but this place was extremely clean and even a germaphobe like myself was able to relax). The hotel is within walking distance of a couple very friendly tasting rooms with extremely kind staff - Stronghold and Pilsbury, as well as restaurants and across the street from a friendly honky-tonk with a local brew on tap. I would recommend this place to anyone who thinks that the regular hotel chains are just boring or overpriced and not up to par - The Cottonwood Hotel has soul, history, and great charm - we will definitely be back some day and will spread the word.
FANTASTIC! by Cabal69e June 28, 2010 (from Chino Valley, traveling with spouse/partner for leisure)
At first we had a hard time finding the hotel...no fault of hotel - Google maps did not have it mapped properly. Upon meeting the owner operator, Karen, she is super friendly and welcoming! She made this the greatest experience. She takes you on a personal guided tour of the property. Karen goes into the history of the location and surroundings. She has poured her heart/soul into this place...and it shows! Our room was unit #1. It was a little smaller than I was thinking but it was perfect for the two of us. Very clean! We have bad backs and the bed was awesome! Very comfortable! On our tour she explained where the best places to eat and get coffee were and even had coupons for discounts. We had arranged a tour of our own and realized that driving afterward would be out of the question. She offered to give us a ride to and from. She had even taken the time to get us copies of maps and different activities around town we could do on the following day. I would absolutely return for another stay without question.
Historic Hotel with TLC by JScottMAC June 18, 2010 (from Phoenix, traveling solo)
The Cottonwood Hotel is a gem in the sleepy town of Cottonwood, AZ. Situated in the Historical District of Cottonwood, this hotel is the cornerstone of a revitalization in the area. While the outside of the hotel is a bit generic, you can see that a lot of TLC has been given to updating the rooms. All are clean, and quiet. Most have kichenettes with refrigerator, and microwave. Karen, the owner was an excellent host and filled me in on the history while we shared some wine on the second floor patio. The patio is a great place to relax and overlooks Main streets restaurants and shops. The location is perfect to walk to several very good restaurants. Also within walking distance are 2 new Wine Tasting Rooms. Arizona wines(Yep!) from Pillsbury and Arizona Stronghold are featured. Great access to Sedona, Jerome and other sites in the Verde Valley. Man, you gotta get some here!
The Cottonwood Hotel was just what I hoped for and the people I met there were an unexpected pleasure. by Colorado Chris March 2010 (from Estes Park, CO traveling solo, business)
I came down to experience Cottonwood and decide if we liked it enough to invest there and possibly retire there. I loved my stay at the Hotel. The Cottonwood Hotel is right on main street in historic old-town cottonwood. A nice thing about Cottonwood is that the primary thoroughfare through Cottonwood is NOT Main Street. Thus, comparatively quiet Main Street serves the resturaunts, cafes, hotel, book shops, antique shops, bakery, and winery on Main Street. Across the street from the hotel, is Nics Steak and Crab Cake House. I had one of the best Chicken Picata dishes ever there. I understand people come from Sedona to eat there. I found the entire Main Street experience to be quiet and safe. The owner, Karen, is very helpful. She stayed up late to accomodate my late arrival and then demonstrated all of the features of my room and the cooking facilities. My room was beautifully renovated and comfortable. I was in the smallest room available and loved it. One can tell this room was remodelled slowly and with care. Anyone who has painted trim or remodelled a bathroom will appreciate the attention to details. Cottonwood is a nice community. From there, one can easily go over to Sedona to enjoy the unbelievable beauty and the hiking and biking. From there, one can go up to Jerome to enjoy a haunted burger and wonder about the hillside construction and history. But, its nice to come back to the quiet of the Cottonwood Hotel.
Our Stay at the Cottonwood Hotel was GREAT! by Gecko79 April 19, 2010 (Family with young children) Durango, CO
Feels like staying with family..Karen was a great host and the room was real fine.
Felt like I was staying with my favorite Aunt. Karen is a beautiful soul.
Chicago Tulip, December 2009, Business, Friends Get-a-Way!
I was recently in Cottonwood attending an event at the Mago Resort which was sold out of rooms. I fell in love with this place because of its unique, old history and homey characteristics. Karen, the proprietor, was so accommodating.
Chicago Tulip & Friends
The kitchenettes were so helpful to save money on food and well stocked with pots, dishes, flatware, containers to go and cooking utensils. I asked if she had a blender to make smoothies and when she did not went out to buy one before I arrived. Now that's special service!
The hotel filled up with other attendees from the conference and we became like a close knit community for the week we stayed in Arizona. One of the residents became sick and Karen made soup for them. When I needed help with directions and recommendations Karen was a wealth of detailed information. She even had walking sticks for me to use during the hikes.
As for the rooms, they are immaculate and cozy with beds that are a dream.
The drive to Sedona is easy and actually would prefer staying here because of the reduced commercialism on the street the hotel is located.
The prices were so reasonable (especially if you share it with a roommate) and what you get compared to a chain hotel is so much more that I felt spoiled. Small touches such as organic shampoos, organic dish soaps, and filtered water showed how mindful she was about being ecologically clean. If you would like warm personal service in a well cared for environment this is the place for you!! If you are on a budget then this is perfect!!

i would recommend the cottonwood hotel to anyone. i was looking for a small historic non commercial place to stay and i hit the jackpot! the rooms are small apartments with all of the comforts that you dont find in most hotels. they have been expertly remodeled and designed using high quality bedding and towels. the owner was very knowledgeable about the area and could direct you to anything that you might need. the hotel itself is located right in the middle of historic cottonwood, and is walking distance from shops and restaurants. i couldnt have been more pleased with my stay!

Accomodations were very comfortable, the proprietor very accommodating. Location on Main Street in old town quaint and convenient. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Cozy, quaint & clean. A nice break from the commercial chains...

We were a little wary of "historic" hotels after our dreary room at the Monte Vista in Flagstaff recently.
But we were delighted at our lovely suite in downtown historic Cottonwood (our favorite part of this high desert town south of Sedona) at the Cottonwood Hotel. It's listed under Specialty hotels, I guess, because of their extended stay policy and, frankly and thank goodness, it's not your Best Western. Downtown historic Cottonwood is also a gem, with boutiques, restaurants, and just that nice hometown feel. It's funny some residents of Cottonwood don't even know it exists.
Suite-4 Bedroom
Suite-4 Bath with Clawfoot Tub
Don't miss this great part of town when you're in the region and I highly recommend the Cottonwood Hotel. Karen was a gracious host. Even the plumbing in this old hotel was outstanding. My husband took a long soak in the large clawfoot tub in the morning. The linens and mattress were also up to my high standards.
Perfect Location Review by MamaGurl, from Washington, DC, Sept. 2009, Friends Get-a-Way!
I Planned this trip for the pupose of going to Sedona but got so much more by staying in Cottonwood. From this location you have an easy 15-20 minute drive to Sedona as well as historic Jerome. The beauty of staying outside the main attractions are that you have a greater geographic perspective and appreciation of this area. It's an awesome place to behold 24hours a day.
In terms of places to stay, there are no lack of options and am very very happy that I stayed at The Cottonwood Hotel in Old Town Cottonwood. This was the most reasonably priced accomodation found in my research and it honestly was more than a great deal. Aside from the charm of this small quaint town where all the action is on Main Street, the hotel itself has a wonderful history of it's own. When Mae West, John Wayne and scores of others shot their movies in the surrounding area, they stayed at The Cottonwood Hotel. Rebuilt in the 1920's after a fire that destroyed most of Main Street, this small hotel is very clean, has modern ammenities and free internet access.
I stayed in one of the two front suites, which had a good sized seperate bedroom, a wee but well equiped kitchen with a ceramic stove top, fridge, pots, pans, cutlery, and even an electric frying pan. The living room had a futon which converted to a bed, lots of pillows, sheets, blankets. Additionally it included a comfy recliner, cable TV and a good assortment of videos about the area and films that were shot in the area. Took advantage of the shared balcony for morning and evening tea, the only balcony on Main Street I might add.
The owner of this sparkling little gem is the lovely Karen. She was warm and welcoming and had LOTS of great tips, ideas and maps of the area.
Historic Old Town Cottonwood, A Great Place to Be!
Review by T7799 from Washington DC, Friends-Get-Away! Sept. 2009
The Cottonwood Hotel is situated perfectly in a small historic downtown area that is less than 20 minutes to Sedona and even closer to Jerome and the surrounding area.
The hotel is historic, yet well maintained with hardwood floors and rooms stocked with all amenities that you need during your stay. By staying here you get a true sense of the local community. You also benefit from the beautiful drives out of Cottonwood to Sedona, Prescott, Jerome etc... Most shops close at 6PM, but you can get a late night drink at a local bar/restaurant within walking distance to the hotel, a nice convenience.
The hotel's fees compared to the surrounding hotels/motels were very reasonable and a better deal IMO with consideration to the amount of space you get at the Cottonwood Hotel. I would describe it as a no frills establishment, you aren't getting a mint on your pillow, but you do get great help from the owner when you need it, nice space, history and the charm of Old Town Cottonwood.
I stayed in the suite 2 (I forgot to take photos). Clean, bright, air conditioned w/three ceiling fans and a few outdoor windows that let in natural light The suite is right near the community balcony. During my stay I had no problems with traffic, bar, or other guest's noises. I highly recommend the room.
Cottonwood Hotel Suite 2 Bedroom
The room had a great living room area w/a sleeper sofa, nice TV (w/movies and tons of channels),a recliner and closet. The kitchen area is outfitted with all the kitchen items you might need: microwave, oven-top, plates, pots and pans, glasses, silverware and refrigerator. Oh, and filtered water! The kitchen has a bakers rack and small table that I used as a work station. The room had internet access (free).
The suites truly are more apartment like than your typical stale hotel room. There were plenty of extra pillows and blankets in the suite. The place has a lot of character. I'll mention again the hardwood floors, they were nice to walk on. The bedroom is a great size. Nice bed with a large closet, full length mirror and a door. The bedroom and half the kitchen space would equal the size of a typical 1-bed hotel room.
The bathroom is situated adjacent to the kitchen area. The bathroom has a pedestal sink, standing shower, toilet and medicine cabinet. The bathroom was fully stocked with towels, soap and shampoo. The bathroom isn't large but I had no problems.
The owner and hostess Karen, made it easy to reserve a room as well as provided great local information from maps, trails to walk in Sedona to dining in the area. Note: Old Town Cafe down the road from the hotel is fantastic. As well as, the Thai restaurant up the road from the hotel.
I'll stay here again. For the following reasons (in random order): 1. Easy access to Sedona & Jerome 2. Price 3. The balcony (so great to sit outside and enjoy tea or coffee 4. Room set-up (kitchenette, separate living-bedroom) 5. Free internet access 6. Free parking w/designated spot 7. Owner/Hostess very knowledgeable and helpful 8. Old Town Cottonwood is a cute town to visit 9. Hardwood floors 10. History of the hotel: John Wayne, Mae West, Elvis etc.. 11. By staying in Old Town Cottonwood you help sustain the local economy.
My Cottonwood Hotel Stay
Ozzy1958, Hattiesburg, solo vacationer, Sept. 2009.
I was extremely satisfied with my stay. The location was convenient to shops , and restaurants downtown. It is also close to many different hiking trails. The service and care provided were tremendous. Karen had information and personal knowledge of the area and its attractions. She took great care to meet my needs.
A beautiful hidden gem with a generous host devoted to the care and preservation of this humble historic hotel. by the fourth jaguar, Flagstaff, September 2009
We arrived late on a saturday night, exhausted, drained and unsure of where we would sleep for the night. Locating this lovely hotel circa 1922 online via our cell phones, we did travel up and down the block a couple of times to find this hidden and magical place. Our host brought us water and escorted us up a flight of stairs to a cozy and extremely clean, warm and charming room. We had a wonderful night's rest and a fabulous talk the next morning covering many areas of interest. We will be back and will be sure to spread the word of this special place in history and the owner who works tirelessly to bring it back to life and share it with others.
The Cottonwood Hotel is an absolutely wonderful place to stay. It is so rich with history and ambiance, and you could not ask for a better location. Right in the middle of Historic "Old Town" The newly renovated rooms are very clean and comfortable. It truly is a hidden gem. We look forward to our repeat visits, we would not consider staying anywhere else! We Love it!

Wow.
Me and my girlfriend traveled north to ride the Verde Canyon Railroad "Tequila Train". We drank lots of delicious margaritas from Cruz Tequila. After our fun ride, we wanted a place that wasn't corporate and gave us a little more service and care. We found it!!
Pros: excellent service, nice/informative staff, room was custom decorated, very classy room, felt like home, felt like a boutique hotel, great location, great history.
Cons: Wish more surrounding restaurants stayed open later so that we could enjoy the town.
A Lot of Fun! Review by Vacation-Hopper_9, Arizona, Sept. 09
My husband and I stayed in the Cottonwood Hotel for our 15 year anniversary. We loved the fact that it was a central location for Jerome, Page Springs, and Sedona. We were up there from Chandler visiting the wineries--which were all fantastic. Karen, the owner of the hotel, was super informative on things to do in the surrounding areas, where to eat, what landmarks to see....she told us the history of Jerome and of Cottonwood. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Kookla76, solo traveler from Savannah, GA May 2009
I've traveled quite a bit and can honestly say that this was one of my favorite trips! I was thrilled with my choice of hotel after meeting Karen & being shown around the property. She has done an amazing job renovating this historic hotel, with the help of her partner Greg. Every room is perfectly decorated with a theme & is stocked with luxurious linens/towels & super comfy beds!
Don't go expecting room service & maids. Do expect beautiful views on the roof balcony & interesting conversations with genuinely kind people that want to help others.
Also, expect to fall in love with their babies, Tibetan mastiffs: Saba, Tristar & Eclipse.
I went to Arizona for a spiritual adventure after some personal challenges in my life. These amazing people welcomed me not only into their hotel but, also into their home & lives. With their caring and encouraging words, they facilitated my journey of self reflection, healing & growth.
Karen and I went on some great adventures like the Sedona vortices, Montezuma Wells, and bonded with a mule named Pedro in Jerome. I highly recommend the Cottonwood hotel if you appreciate unique surroundings with real history and divine accommodations. I can not wait to return!!

Home Away From Home
Review by Cindy013 from Yelm, WA (Solo Traveler/Business)~April 2009
The Cottonwood Hotel has become my “home away from home” during my extended stays in Cottonwood. It’s perfect for me because I’m a single traveling business woman. The price is AMAZING considering its prime location in the Verde Valley. Nestled between beautiful Sedona and Jerome, it is centrally located and just a few steps from the local Athletic Club, within walking distance to the hospital, city and state parks, hiking trails, popular restaurants, bakeries, cafés, galleries, antique shops, in a diverse and eclectic western town. The hotel is small with a half dozen charming suites that are updated & clean and the furnished kitchen/kitchenette suit my needs for a cozy atmosphere while I’m traveling. For over a decade, Karen, the owner and her partner Gregory have kept this well kept secret alive which has been providing a valuable connection to us visitors and passer’s by. Karen’s knowledge of the history and the present day services of this town have helped me develop an intimate relationship with Cottonwood.
The historic hotel is not your typical boring place to stay, as you get your own apartment suite instead of a stale, cheap motel room. I enjoy having the SECURE high speed internet, laundry facilities, assigned parking and ( my favorite thing) after a drink at the local tavern it's a short walk “home” where I sit on the common balcony overlooking Main Street and unwind, contemplate the day and enjoy the beautiful night sky. When I’m asked where I’m staying, I’m surprised that many locals aren’t even aware of this overlooked treasure that is right in their own back yard!
Affordable Extended Stay in this Apart-Hotel Review by SubConsciousHU, Calif... (Solo Business/Leisure) March 2009
I had a great experience in this private small historic hotel. The studio apartment suite was very clean and nice hardwood floors. I was very impressed. This was so much better than a motel room with kitchenette, even though I don't do much in the kitchen, I still had the amenities. And the price was comparable.
I could step outside to a choice of several coffee shops & nice restaurants and an athletic club. And didn't have to worry about drinking and driving, when I could walk across the street for my evening martini at Nic's Steakhouse. Since I love coming to Sedona a couple of times a year, I thought that I would give this place a try (in Old Town Cottonwood) and I'm really glad I did. It was a short drive, only 15 minutes to west Sedona. As I like traveling on a budget, I will definitely come back here. You won't find a place like this in Sedona. And if you did, you would pay 3-4 times the price.
Cons: The bathrooms are small, but I'm a guy that don't spend much time in one. I am also a smoker and this property is smoke-free. If no one was on the balcony, I could go out there to smoke. I'm not one to smoke inside anyways. But if someone was out on the balcony, I had to walk downstairs and stand outside on the corner. Anyways, no real complaints. This was a great find. I will be back.

This Hotel is very Historic & Deeelightful! by Yuma John (couple) July 2009
When my wife and I travel around Arizona and other areas we try to find the more historic hotels to stay in. So when we had the opportunity to travel to the Cottonwood/Sedona area we found the Cottonwood Hotel. It is conveniently located in the heart of Old Cottonwood on the Main Street. There is plenty of parking and lots of excellant dining opportunities nearby.
The hotel room we stayed in was the Mae West apartment. I say apartment because is was like a two room studio with full bath. The bed was comfortable with satelite TV. The sitting room had a comfortable love seat couch, a small kitchenette and a nice size working desk or table for your laptop if you can't leave home without it.
There was great coffee available if you have to have a cup when you get up in the morning like I do, and it was very good coffee, which is a surprise for a hotel room coffee maker. The bathroom was a bit small but considering it was built in the mid 20th century it provided us with everything we need from a clawfoot bath tub to a unique shower. I loved the pomegranate shampoo also. There were plenty of towels and soap available also.
The owner Karen is a wonderful person and very knowledgable about the area. She has lots of good advice regarding dining and other activities. Cottonwood is conveniently located with access to Sedona, Jerome and the Camp Verde area. The Cottonwood Hotel is a great alternative to the more costly Sedona hotels.
We are looking forward to our next visit to the area and a stay at the Historic Cottonwood Hotel in the future.
Very comfortable hotel and perfect location
ThelmaPhoenix, May 2009, family with young children (leisure)
We had a wonderful time during our stay at Cottonwood Hotel. The owner was very welcoming and went out of her way to meet us there upon check-in, stocked our room with the requested coffee and condiments and provided us with brochures and coupons for the area. She was very personable and made our stay that much more enjoyable. We met my husband's family from California there for a short weekend catch-up and to enjoy the beauty of Cottonwood, Jerome and surrounding areas. Cottonwood is a charming locale with a great restaurant right across the street from the hotel. Jerome was just a 10-15 min drive and there are many more sites within the area. The rooms were very comfortable, homey and nicely decorated. We had our young daughter and infant son and the accomodations suited us all greatly. The location is truly ideal. Thank you to Karen, the owner, for her thoughtfulness and time which made our stay memorable.

We choose to stay in Cottonwood instead of busy Sedona and we are so glad that we did. Karen was a wonderful hostess...full of history of the area and suggested several places that we visited. Cottonwood is just a few minutes from Sedona and a wonderful small town. The Cottonwood Hotel is set in the original part of Cottonwood and has many small shops. We rented a studio suite for several nights. We had our own bathroom, sitting area, bed and furnished kitchen. After each day of hiking it was a wonderful spot to come back to. We cooked several meals in the room but also ate across the street at Nic's twice. We recommend both the Cottonwood Hotel and Nic's.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Cottonwood Hotel! We stayed with her when some work was being done on our house. Karen was very hospitable and even set up a special little bed for my son. He LOVED it! We stayed in the Mae West room and I definitely felt like a movie star waking up in that luxurious bed with the mirror overhead! We had a great time and really enjoyed spending the evenings on the balcony overlooking beautiful Old Town Cottonwood!

The room was great. It had historic charm yet had modern comforts. Everything was very clean and the furnishings were comfortable. The location was perfect on the main street in Cottonwood. We were able to go for walks with the kids and enjoy ourselves without driving anywhere. Although on the main street, at night there was very minimal noise. The manager/ owner was very accessible and all of our needs were quickly met. We will be back soon. We enjoyed our stay!

Second Time Around Review by JerseyAcqua (Couple from New Jersey) September 11, 2008 Since the Phoenix Pointe Hilton at Squaw Peak was booked solid until Wednesday August 27, we asked the concierge there to recommend a hotel in Cottonwood for Monday and Tuesday. He suggested we contact the Cottonwood Hotel. We were very interested in that suggestion since we had stayed in that hotel during our first visit to Arizona back in 1979, and prefer historic, less populated areas of Arizona to those which have overgrown with tourism and industry.
To our delight, the Cottonwood Hotel sure has improved since 1979, but still maintains the small town feel and local charm that we find so appealing. In 1979, there was a single "swamp cooler" to combat the heat, and the other furnishings were bare minimum. This time we stayed in Unit 2, which had an air conditioner and celing fans that did a fine job of keeping the place cool. We were very impressed with the beautiful wooden furniture and harwood floors, and the unit was well-appointed overall. Though we watch very little TV, there were many channels to choose on the sattelite dish network. There were much more interesting shows, however, out the front picture window in the form of beautiful sunrises in the morning and exciting thunderstorms in the afternoon.
Joe & Deb Aquaviva
We spent a good deal of time on the second-story porch which overlooks Main Street, giving us an even more expanded view than our front picture window. Besides sunrises, sunsets, and storms, we could watch, and even say hello to, people passing by on the street below. From there, we planned our walking excursions around the town and surrounding areas, like Dead Horse Ranch State Park.
The hotel owner, Karen, and her partner Greg were kind and delightful people who also helped us plan hikes as well as points of interest that required a car ride. Karen even took us on a guided tour of nearby Jerome and Clarkdale before we left on Wednesday.
They also recommended places to eat, and as a result we had fabulous meals during our short stay. All the restaurants were within walking distance from the hotel.
I'm sure we will be staying at the Cottonwood Hotel the next time we are in Arizona.

Away From the Tourist Traps ~Here is an Original Hotel with Heart & Style Review by DebMoran, Wellington Australia June 2009
We stayed three nights in Cottonwood hotel - 2 more than originally planned. Karen is a wonderful hostess and gave us great advice about where to go for hiking, sightseeing and dining. The best thing about this hotel is that it is original and homey. If you want widescreen large plasma tv and king size beds then this is not the place for you. But if you want a real Arizona experience then try Cottonwood hotel.
Lovely Sedona Location with an Authenic Touch Review by JaniceBrighton, London, England June 2009
Lovely Cottonwood is just a bit further along than Sedona town and it's well worth it to miss the tourist trap and enjoy an unspoilt bit of this lovely part of the country. The hotel owners are friendly and go out of their way to ensure your stay is enjoyable. If you're fed up with the chain hotels and want a more genuine US experience, this is the one for you. Old Cottonwood is a lovely little town with charming restaurants and cafe's and well located for visits to historical Jerome and Montazuma's Castle. Enjoy!
Historic Cottonwood Hotel ~ A Good Home Away from Home Review by AdventureHome,New Mexico
My hosts Karen and Greg went out of their way to make me comfortable. Wood floors, hypoallergenic eco-friendly memory foam mattress, clean-air control on A/C unit, filtered water in kitchen, environmentally conscious cleaning products, was all a plus for my return here to ground floor studio suite #7. Both times I stayed 4+ weeks. As I prefer fresh air versus A/C, the evenings were cool enough to open the door and back window to get a cool breeze. I am a woman who was traveling on my own and felt very safe. The Cottonwood Hotel worked for me while I was waiting for my home to be finished. I definitely recommend this hotel for extended stays or even a week-end.

I recently had the privilige of spending 3 days and 2 nights in the Historic Cottonwood Hotel in the heart of old town Cottonwood, AZ. From my first conversation with Karen...to my check-out...she was a pleasure to deal with. This landmark hotel is a step back in time, wood floors, clawfoot tub, antique fixtures and furnishings. Memories of days gone by abound throughout the hotel. The rates were great, the accomidations were a breath of fresh air.....I almost forgot the breath taking view from the community balcony where you can enjoy the sites and sounds of historic downtown Cottonwood....

We spent 3 nights in this charming old hotel. We were made very much welcome, the room was very clean, the kitchenette well stocked, and the location, convenient. A Dose of Nostalgia Review by livinthelyfe Sep 2008
Historic towns have a way of taking you back when times were simple and people were friendly and down to earth. The Old Town Cottonwood Hotel fits that bill perfectly and is a favorite escape especially for my family and friends in Phoenix. No cookie cutter hotels for me they are a dime a dozen. The Cottonwood Hotel offers many modern ammenities with the historic charm intact making it so unique. Karen the owner is always a very gracious host and offers a wealth of knowledge not only on the area for sights, tours, hikes, events but also for making you feel very welcome.
I have stayed at the best and all they want is your money, no more! This property offers incredible views including those from the balcony of the surrounding Verde Valley and Sedona Red Rock, absolutely beautiful. The proximity to Sedona/Jerome/Canyon Train as well as local art galleries/restaurants/shops make this place a rare find. The room was clean, comfortable, affordable and had all the efficiencies to make for a great stay. I am back in Phoenix looking forward to my next adventure in a historic town!

The owner, Karen, was very friendly, gave us a tour of the hotel, and gave us recommendations for fun things to do in Cottonwood.
