Some Arizona Ghost Towns are just remains of what was once there. Some are revived, like Jerome. And some should as well be or sometimes seem to be a ghost town! It all depends on what you are looking for.
Are you looking for?
• History (Arizona has endless western & Native American history) • Picture taking (photograghers heaven); whether you're wanting to take photos of ghosts towns, ghosts, old buildings, along with its panoramic beauty of daytime blue skies, nights shooting stars, sunrises, sunsets, rainbows, mountains, valleys, rivers, creeks, nature and all of its natural wonders, Arizona has some of the best spots in the world. • Actual Ghosts (they're everywhere!) • Small sleepy western towns... Most cities and towns in the state of Arizona are sleepy. See my definitions below... Again what are you looking for?
Small Sleepy Western Town What one may call sleepy is sought out by many. If you prefer a down to earth, small western town atmosphere and a friendly community, with a short 15 minute drive to Sedona attractions, visit the Old Town of Cottonwood, AZ. To most it is said to be a sleepy town. So what does this town have to offer? A great small historic hotel with boutique suites (yes it's mine, but why do you think I bought it!) It's just steps to popular restaurants, (no need to drive to lunch or dinner or that evening cocktail), sitting amongst a unique array of shops & galleries in this 3 block section. The town borders a rare greenway riparian with hiking trails, Verde River, state park, birding, horsback riding and more. You will find year-round Wednesday night drumming circles that anyone can join in at anytime at a local gallery, a Farmers Market every Thursday night from 5PM to dark with a jamboree July thru September, best coffee shops in town, best bakery (breads with no added preservatives), pubs, saloon, tavern grille, cafes, picnic areas, parks, all in this small hometown of USA and all within walking distance. It has beautiful blue skies, rainbows, sunsets, shooting stars and mild temperatures all year round. You can get dinner until 11PM, weekend music at the local saloon, monthly art walk, annual events, free self-guided historic walking tour and much more if you look or ask. And that's what some call sleepy! It's just a great small town in the USA!
The newer part of Cottonwood, AZ is the hub for Sedona and the Verde Valley, with commerce strip centers with box stores like Super Walmart, Home-Depot and all your fast food restaurants.
15 minutes away from Cottonwood is Sedona where the tourism brings in over 4 million people who come to see some of the world's most panoramic scenery. If you're looking for a resort re-treat, even though it is a high tourist district, it is still a small town. Some still consider it a sleepy town as the downtown closes at 5PM and nightlife is limited. The downside for the average traveler is the high prices for lodging & dining. But if you can afford it, you will find the best. And what the heck, you've got to treat yourself once in awhile.
And if you're not into the small sleepy towns because you prefer an abundance of city night-life, come and visit us anyways for a change of pace, then go stay in Scottsdale AZ (one of the nicest areas of Phoenix metro) is a great choice. The downside to some, might be...nice warm 3 digit temperatures 7 months out of the year, air-pollution with minimal blue skies, traffic conjestion and a drive of 25-45 minutes to get from 1 nightclub to another...
So why am I in Old Town Cottonwood, AZ? It did not pick me. I picked it. Growing up in Michigan, eventually traveling from coast to coast and back. I lived in Tucson, in and out of Phoenix, lived in Lake Havasu, Tombstone and Sedona. I really like what some might call a small sleepy western town, right here in Old Town Cottonwood.
